Mbappé's Return to Form: Can France Go All the Way?

After a frustrating group stage where he managed just one goal, Kylian Mbappé has exploded into life in the knockout rounds. Four goals in two matches, including a hat-trick against England in the quarterfinals, have silenced his critics and restored France to favourites status for the semifinal against Brazil.

The Tactical Shift

France coach Didier Deschamps made a crucial adjustment before the round of 16, shifting Mbappé from a wide left position to a narrower role just off the central striker. This subtle change gave Mbappé more touches in the half-spaces where he is most dangerous — the zone between the opposition's defensive and midfield lines.

The result was immediate. Against Poland in the round of 16, Mbappé found pockets of space he simply hadn't accessed in the group stage, scoring twice and creating three more chances. Against England, he was unstoppable.

The Brazil Test

Brazil's defence will be a far sterner test. Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhães have been imperious throughout the tournament, and Casemiro provides an excellent screen in front of them. But Mbappé's pace on the break could be France's most dangerous weapon if Brazil commit too many players forward — which, given their attacking instincts, seems likely.

"Kylian is back to his best. The semifinal against Brazil will be the match of the tournament." – Didier Deschamps, France head coach

The semifinal on July 8 at MetLife Stadium shapes up as a genuine classic. Two of the world's best attacking players at the peak of their powers, two of the best coaches in world football, and everything on the line. Don't miss it.
