Vinicius Jr. Moves Closer to Ballon d'Or With World Cup Heroics

Seven goals. Four assists. A 94% dribble success rate. Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi have had excellent tournaments, but the numbers tell an unambiguous story: Vinicius Jr. is the best player at FIFA World Cup 2026, and his performances may finally deliver the Ballon d'Or that many believe he deserved two years ago.

A Tournament for the Ages

It started with a brace against Iran in the group stage opener, continued with a masterclass against Serbia, and reached its peak with two goals against Colombia in the quarterfinals. Vinicius has scored in every knockout round match and has been directly involved in 11 of Brazil's 13 goals in the tournament.

What makes his performances even more remarkable is the level of attention opponents are paying him. Every team Brazil has faced has assigned a dedicated man-marker to Vinicius, and he has still managed to be the most effective attacking player in the tournament.

The Ballon d'Or Race

The Ballon d'Or, awarded in October, places significant weight on World Cup performances. If Brazil win the tournament — and Vinicius continues at this level — it is difficult to see how any voter could place him below Mbappé or Messi, both of whom have had excellent but arguably inferior campaigns.

"He's the best player in the world right now. What he's doing here is historic." – Rodrygo, speaking after the Colombia match

Two Games Away From Everything

With the semifinal against France and potentially a final to come, Vinicius has two more chances to cement his legacy. Brazil has not won a World Cup since 2002. Vinicius has not won a Ballon d'Or. July 2026 could change both of those facts.
