The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A has passed the halfway mark. Matchday 21 of 38 is done, which means 55 per cent of the campaign is behind us and the table has stopped being a rough sketch of intentions.

Flamengo lead with 60 points and a goal difference of +32. Palmeiras are second on 57, three points back, with +26 in that column. That is the whole title race as it stands: two clubs, one gap, no room for a bad fortnight.

Behind them the picture is tighter and messier. Paranaense hold third on 49, Fluminense are a point behind on 48, and Bahia sit fifth on 46 with the same goal difference as the club above them. Cruzeiro close the group on 45. Four teams separated by four points — one win reshuffles all of it.

The scoring charts belong to Kevin Viveros. The Paranaense forward has 18 goals, two clear of Pedro of Flamengo on 16. Gabriel Barbosa of Santos has 13, then comes Carlos Vinícius of Grêmio with 10 and Luciano of São Paulo on 9.

The league's most recent fixture finished 1-0, Mineiro beating Bragantino on Saturday 3 October. The next one is Wednesday 7 October, Bragantino against Mirassol — the same day the competition resumes after its break.

Twenty-one rounds down, seventeen to play. Who actually wants it?
